What would happen if YOU became disabled? Retirement Plans, children's educational plans, and a whole lot more often get put on hold.

But your mortgage payments, car payments, and credit card payments continue. It's not something people want to think about, but it's a "What if" scenario that everyone should prepare for.

Currently, federal government employees have options to choose from for health, dental and vision care, but a formal disability insurance option is NOT available. In the absence of such insurance you have two options if you become disabled due to an injury or sickness.

Accrued sick leave can be used for a short term disabling condition or you can apply for disability retirement under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or Federal Employment Retirement System (FERS) if your condition is expected to last over 12 months. These two options are not adequate for all employees. If you are new to the Federal Government or do not have enough accrued sick leave available, then an illness or accident could force you into a leave without pay situation.

If you retire disabled, you have officially separated from the federal government and would need to be formally rehired to return to work.

These should not be your only options to protect your most important asset--your paycheck.
