Access to quality healthcare in Georgia remains a challenge for citizens of this post-Soviet country. But efforts to modernize the country, including the healthcare system, mean that the situation is improving.
In 2011, IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, invested $3 million in a holding company established by Archimedes Global to focus on emerging markets. The Archimedes Global team has strong technical and medical insurance skills, solid operational models and a hands-on approach to managing hospitals. IFC's rationale for investing was to help expand access to health insurance and quality healthcare services in previously underserved regions. In late 2011, health insurance company Archimedes Global Georgia opened two new hospitals in Lagodekhi and Tsnori, small towns near the border with Azerbaijan.
The two Archimedes hospitals in the Kakheti region replaced Soviet-era clinics known for outdated equipment and poor healthcare services. The combined approach, where one company provides both health insurance and healthcare services, means patients spend less time on paperwork.
