A Monopoly on Lives is a short student film that critiques the Canadian government's virtual monopoly on healthcare. Through our research we discovered that, although the Canada Health Act does not outright ban private practices, such practice must still operate within the tight and bureaucratic confines of national legislation. Furthermore, accepting private payments directly from patients is prohibited. Essentially, private medicine, to any degree of practicality, is still illegal in Canada.
With only the government to turn to, Canadian's find themselves trapped in a monolithic system, that is, a government monopoly on care. Thus, the focus of our film is to examine the current condition of Canada's socialized healthcare system, to report on the failings of said system, and to understand how these failings restrict our freedom.
